Swoyambhunath is the most ancient and enigmatic holy shrine in Kathmandu valley. This stupa is located on a lovely hillock lies about four kilometer from the center of Kathmandu city. Its lofty white dome and glittering golden spire are visible for many miles and from all sides of the city. Historical records found on a stone inscription give evidence that the stupa was already an important Buddhist pilgrimage destination by the 5th century AD. This stupa is also known affectionately as the ‘Monkey Temple’. Because the large troop of handsome monkeys that guards the hill and amuses visitors and devotees with tricks. This site offers fine views over Kathmandu valley. It is particularly striking in the early evening under the soft glow of moonlight.
