Trek Overview

Kanchenjunga trek Nepal in the wilderness of the beaten track in Nepal. Kanchenjunga is the third-highest mountain in the world. The Kanchenjunga mountain range covers the eastern part of Nepal and India. Kanchenjunga trekking route is opened for foreigners trekking in only 1988. Actually, Kanchenjunga is a remote and undeveloped area as compared to other trekking destinations in Nepal. However, Kanchenjunga treks are a real paradise for adventure lovers. Here trekkers get an opportunity of great walking through terraced fields, and forests of birch, bamboo, and rhododendron. Himalayan bears, barking deer, and the lesser panda are among the rich animal and birdlife that fill most of the part of Kanchenjunga trekking. The breathtaking views of Mt. Kanchenjunga, Makalu with beautiful glaciers offer further excitement to all trekkers along this trekking trail. Besides nature, the trekkers also witness the culture and lifestyle of Limbus and Rais on this trail. These are the two dominant ethnic groups in eastern Nepal. During Kanchenjunga treks, one is bound to have an unforgettable experience of difference that cannot be found somewhere else in the world.

Kanchenjunga trek Nepal trail leads with amazing scenery of landscapes, alpine green woodlands, vegetation, and mountains, this adventurous trek after exploring the southern base camp, and then heading to cross three high passes Mirgin, Tamo-la, and Simion-La at above 4,500 m, on reaching the top fantastic views of Makalu, Baruntse, and Chamlang.

After Simion La, the walk descends gently to Tamo La at 4,560 m with a grand view of Khumbakarna, then the trail finally heads downhill towards the Buddhist area of Ghunsa, 3,480 m, Kangbachen 4,000m, and then to Lhonak at 4,780 m high here with another wonderful rest day for local hike and excursion to Kanchenjunga North Base Camp also called Pangpema at 5,150 meters the highest point of this adventure.

Detailed Itinerary

Arrival in Kathmandu'

Arrive at Kathmandu international airport and meet the representative from Himalayan Smile treks with the company’s display board will greet you outside the arrival terminal and transfer you to your Hotel. Check-in to a hotel. Have a brief orientation at the office. Overnight at a hotel in Kathmandu.

Kathmandu valley sightseeing'

Preparation for the special permit regarding your documents. Kathmandu valley sightseeing by private vehicle. The destinations you are visiting are Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Boudhanath Stupa, and Pashupatinath Temple. After the sightseeing, drive back to your hotel. Overnight at a hotel in Kathmandu.

Fly Bhadrapur. Drive to Illam Bazaar'

The morning is free to sort out any last-minute arrangements for the trek. After preparation, drive to the airport for an afternoon flight to the hot and humid Bhadrapur. From Bhadrapur, take a 4-5 hour ride to Illam, the tea capital of the country. Overnight at the hotel in Illam Bazaar.

Drive to Taplejung. Trek to Mitlung'

Take a vehicle and drive from Illam bazaar to Taplejung (1,840m) which is the district headquarters. From here you will start your trek while descending all the way to Mitlung (1,140m), which is approximately 2 hours of walking. Explore the village in the evening. Overnight at the mountain lodge in Mitlung.

Trek Mitlung to Chirwa'

Today you will trek to Chirwa through the sub-tropical forests, multi-ethnic village, and some rock cliffs. Lunch en-route at Sinhua or Thewa village. You will then descend down to Chirwa and register your KCAP at the tourist check- post. Overall time 7 hours. Explore the village. Overnight at the mountain lodge in Chirwa.

Trek Chirwa to Sekathum'

Start the trek through cardamon fields and flat river terraces along the Tamur. After 2 hours, reach a typical Limbu village named Taplethok. Take your lunch at Taplethok and continue the trek. You will then climb and descend a few times and follow the Ghunsa river to reach the beautiful Sherpa village, Sekathum.

Trek Sekathum to Amjilessa'

The trail continues to the narrow trail above the Ghunsa river while climbing up the stone steps and passing some waterfalls. Then climb up to Ghaiyabari for the lunch break. Continue another trail following the river, passing waterfalls, and cross the bridge all the way to the small Sherpa settlement at Amjilessa where your overnight stay will be.

Trek Amjilessa to Gyabla'

Walk through the steep gorge of bamboo, rhododendrons, and oak forest. After 3 hours of walking, have your lunch at Thangyam with a view of the mountains. Continue another 3 hours of the walk while leaving the river and climb steeply to the Sherpa village at Gyabla. Dinner. Overnight at the mountain lodge.

Trek Gyabla to Ghunsa'

Trek for 4 hours to Phaley (3,140m) and take a break. This place is a Tibetan refugee village and has 2 monasteries. After lunch, the trail continues through the sub-alpine forest and steep river valley. Reach Ghunsa and show your trekking permit at the major checkpoint of Kanchenjunga. Overnight at the mountain lodge in Ghunsa.

Acclimatization in Ghunsa'

Today is a rest day in Ghunsa and can stroll around this wonderful Sherpa village. This village had a helicopter accident that killed 24 passengers in conservation work. There are some infrastructures like lodges, cafes, health posts, 35W micro-hydro, and a school that was helped to build by a group of San Francisco climbers.

Trek Ghunsa to Khangbachen'

The trail ascent up the Ghunsa valley through mixed larch and juniper forest with grazing pastures. Reach Laphuk (4,100m) which consists of a few small huts for the lunch. Continue some hours of walking to Khangbachen. From here can view Kabru, Phaley, Nagoma, and Kumbhakarna mountains. O/N at the mountain lodge.

Trek Khangbachen to Lhonak'

Trek along the Ghunsa river through rocky fields while gaining in elevation slightly 900m to Lhonak. First, you will walk 2 hours to Ramdang and have your lunch along the mountain views. Continue along the lateral moraine of the Kanchenjunga Glacier. Cross the river into the Lhonak for an overnight stay at the mountain lodge.

Lhonak to Pangpema, Explore KBC'

Today is the day you will reach the north side of Kanchenjunga Base Camp (5,140m) which is also called Pangpema base camp. Trek 3.5 hours to Pangpema, From here you will see the best views of Kanchenjunga massif. Explore the KBC along with the glaciers. Return back to Pangpema and O/N at mountain lodge/camp.

Trek Pangpema to Khangbachen'

Now that northern KBC is explored, the next destination will be south of the base camp in Yanglung. Hence, you will return back the same route until Khangbachen for your stay. Lunch en-route at Lhonak. Overall 8 hrs of walking slightly lost down the elevation at Khangbachen. Overnight at the mountain lodge.

Trek Khangbachen to Ghunsa'

Return back the same route till you reach Ghunsa for the stay. You will have a different experience along the Ghunsa river. Lunch en-route at Laphuk (4,100) then slightly descend down to the Ghunsa. Total trekking hours would be 5 hours of walking. Take dinner and overnight at the mountain lodge in Ghunsa.

Trek Ghunsa to Selele pass'

Today you will ascent to Selele pass (4,500m) walking through the thick forest covered by snow. Make sure you walk your pace slowly and steadily to prevent any altitude sickness. After 6 hours of trek, you will reach Selele pass which has one cafe for the settlement. Overnight at the camp.

Trek Selele Pass to Tseram'

Wake up early as you have a long journey passing through Mirgin La pass (4,480m). Climb gradually through the alpine scrubs of rhododendrons and junipers. Encounter the splendid views, and mani stones, and look for the eagle. Lunch en-route. Total 7 walking hours. Overnight at the mountain lodge/camp in Tseram.

Trek Tseram to Ramche.'

After breakfast, pack your backpacks and start the trek. Today you don’t have great distance but the labored walking to a high elevation at Ramche (4,580m). Caution during rainy season as the trail may have some steep landslides. Overnight at the mountain lodge/camp in Ramche

Day hike to Yalung Base Camp'

Today you have a day hiking to Yalung Base Camp (4,500m) which is south of the Kanchenjunga Base Camp. Trek along the mighty Yalung Glacier while observing the splendid south face of Kangchenjunga and its surroundings. Once you are done, return back to Ramche for the overnight stay.

Trek Ramche to Tseram'

After encountering one of the last highlights of the Kanchenjunga trek at Yalung Base Camp, you will descend down to new exciting trails until Suketar (2,300m). First, you will trek back the same route to Tseram. Lunch en-route. Overnight at the mountain lodge or camp in Tseram.

Trek Tseram to Tortong'

Start the trek from Tseram following the Simbua river through the rhododendron and juniper forest along the stream. Walk 2.5 hours and reach Andha Phedi (3,550m) for a lunch break. Continue downstream into the river and forest all the way to Tortong (2,990m) where your overnight stay at camp or lodge will be.

Trek Tortong to Yamphudin'

Trek along identifying the flowering plant and bird-watching traverse through old fir/juniper forest. While no villages are there until 6 hours of walk to Amji Khola (2,250m) at the foot of the hill. Cross Amji Khola and walk 2.5hrs to Yamphudin. This village is big having an information center and checkpoint. O/N at mountain lodge.

Trek Yamphudin to Mamankhe'

Today is the easy trekking trail with few descents and ascents, while many villages are on the way. After 3 hours of walking, you will reach Mamankhe (1,900m). This is a Limbu village with a cultural house and lifestyle. Take lunch and explore the village in the evening. Dinner. Overnight at the camp or lodge in Mamankhe.

Trek Mamankhe to Kande Bhanjyang'

The trail descends down and crosses the suspension bridge of Takshewa Khola. Then trek through the cultivation and terraces while ascending and descending. After 3 hrs, lunch en route at Phumpe Danda (1,750m). Continue along the final ascend to Kande Bhanjyang at the hilltop. O/N at the mountain lodge.

Trek Kande Bhanjyang to Lali Kharka'

The trail continues as you descend and cross Pha Khola. Walk through the oak forest to Simbu village with good views of Makalu. Lunch en-route. Climb almost 300m to reach Lali Kharka (2,000m). Explore the village in the evening. Dinner. Overnight at the mountain lodge in Lali Kharka.

Today you will walk only 2 hours of easy trekking along the forested ridge. Then a short descent to Suketar (2,300m) and take lunch. Explore this beautiful village in Suketar with a lot of cafes available. Enjoy the last evening of the trek. Dinner and overnight at the mountain lodge in Suketar.

Drive to Bhadrapur, Fly to KTM'

Today is the end of the trek as you reach Bhadrapur. Early morning after breakfast, leave Suketar and take a local vehicle to Bhadrapur airport. Take 40 min of scenic flight to Kathmandu with the view of the Himalayas. Once you reach Kathmandu, check in at the hotel and enjoy your leisure time. O/N at the hotel in Kathmandu.
