Shivapuri hiking around the Kathmandu Valley is a blend of a few days of hiking through green mountain trails on the northern side of the Kathmandu Valley with an overnight stay in a tent and sightseeing of amazing cultural heritage sites in Nepal. This trek is one of the best options for those people who desire close-up with nature but are not interested in many days of hard walking and going to higher elevations. This trek starts from Kakani, 45 minutes' drive from Kathmandu city. While hiking, you enjoy colorful flowers, various animals, and enchanting views of the Mt. Annapurna, Mt. Langtang, and Mt. Rolwaling ranges. The Nepal Camping Trek is also special for bird lovers. Many endemic and exotic birds can be seen around its calm nature. In the first three days, you walk on the trail inside Shivapuri National Park. Then you arrive at Chisapani village. Here you explore the lifestyle and culture of mountain people. From Chisapani, you move to Nagarkot, one of the famous destinations for sunrise/sunset and mountain views. After a one-night stay at Nagarkot, you drive back to the Kathmandu Valley with a sightseeing tour of Bhaktapur city, an open museum of typical Nepalese art and architecture. For another day, your sightseeing continues to Swoyambhunath, Boudhanath, and Pashupatinath. This tour ends with the farewell dinner at a typical Nepalese restaurant, enjoying local cuisines, folk dances, and music.
Shivapuri National Park, located just north of Kathmandu Valley, is kind of one of Nepal’s most easily reachable protected areas, and people often talk about its rich biodiversity as well as that scenic, kind of calm beauty. The place runs through dense forests of oak, rhododendron, and pine, and it supports a wide range of wildlife. You can spot leopards and different deer, plus over 300 species of birds, so it turns into a solid place for birdwatchers and nature lovers, even if you only have a day.
The highest spot is Shivapuri Peak (2,732m), and from there you get really nice panoramic views over Kathmandu Valley. On really clear days, you can also see faraway Himalayan peaks, almost like they’re stacked in the air. The Shivapuri hiking experience was a wonderful escape from Kathmandu. The peaceful forest trails, fresh mountain air, and beautiful valley views made the hike refreshing and memorable.
