Trek Overview

Trek Overview

Kanchenjunga trek in Nepal, in the wilderness off the beaten track. Kanchenjunga is the third-highest mountain in the world. The Kanchenjunga mountain range spans eastern Nepal and India. The Kanchenjunga trekking route was opened for foreigners to trek in only 1988. Actually, Kanchenjunga is a remote and undeveloped area as compared to other trekking destinations in Nepal. However, Kanchenjunga treks are a real paradise for adventure lovers. Here, trekkers get an opportunity for great walking through terraced fields and forests of birch, bamboo, and rhododendron. Himalayan bears, barking deer, and the lesser panda are among the rich animal and birdlife that fill most of the part of the Kanchenjunga trekking. The breathtaking views of Mt. Kanchenjunga and Makalu with beautiful glaciers offer further excitement to all trekkers along this trekking trail. Besides nature, the trekkers also witness the culture and lifestyle of Limbus and Rais on this trail. These are the two dominant ethnic groups in eastern Nepal. During Kanchenjunga treks, one is bound to have an unforgettable experience of differences that cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

The Kanchenjunga trek Nepal trail leads with amazing scenery of landscapes, alpine green woodlands, vegetation, and mountains. This adventurous trek follows the southern base camp and then heads to cross three high passes, Mirgin, Tamo-la, and Simion-La, above 4,500 m, and, upon reaching the top, offers fantastic views of Makalu, Baruntse, and Chamlang.

After Simion La, the walk descends gently to Tamo La at 4,560 m with a grand view of Khumbakarna, then the trail finally heads downhill towards the Buddhist area of Ghunsa, 3,480 m, Kangbachen 4,000m, and then to Lhonak at 4,780 m high here with another wonderful rest day for local hike and excursion to Kanchenjunga North Base Camp also called Pangpema at 5,150 meters the highest point of this adventure.

Kanchenjunga trek Nepal can Enjoy the highlight of this awesome adventure at Kanchenjunga North Base Camp after a great exciting time with a memorable moment, Himalayan Smile return journey using a different scenic route to Sukhetar walking past nice villages of Phole 3,100 m,  Amjilessa 2,500m, Tapethok 1,300 m and heading towards the warmer area as the altitude drops walking past Mitlung 1,550 m and then to  Suketar 2,440 m for the flight back to Kathmandu after an adventure of a lifetime experience with Himalayan Smile and its cheerful and friendly guides and porters.

Mirgin La, Sinion La, and Selele La, 4,480m–4,600m

From Out of Ghunsa (3,595 m), the route climbs in a pretty steady way through rhododendron and juniper woods, almost like one long gentle tug, up toward a higher camp near Selele Base Camp (about 4,200 m). This is sort of the in-between place before you start the pass crossing, and that’s when it gets more serious, no joking. The next day, trekkers head over several big high passes, Mirgin La, Sinion La, and Selele La, all sitting in that 4,480 m–4,600 m band, before you descend toward Tseram or Ramche on the southern side. Along the path, you’re treated to super wide open views of Kanchenjunga, Jannu, Makalu, and other immense Himalayan giants, the kind you just pause, stare, and forget the rest of. This stretch feels quite remote; it can be tough on the body, but it stays really scenic, plus it delivers some of the most breathtaking high-altitude mountain panoramas you’ll find anywhere along the Kanchenjunga Trek route.

Kanchenjunga base camp

Kanchenjunga has two base camps, the North one (Pangpema, 5,143 m) and the South one (Oktang, 4,730 m), and for some reason they just feel different almost immediately, like you notice it before you really even put in effort. Each camp comes with its own kind of viewpoint, not the same angle, not the same vibe … It's a bit like “same same," but honestly it still isn’t.

The trek to the North Base Camp from Ghunsa usually takes about 2 days. You end up with this close-up meeting with Kanchenjunga’s main summit, plus you’ll spot the glacier too, right there. For the South Base Camp, the route from Tseram is more like around 1-2 days, but it leans into something bolder, a more dramatic panorama, and it doesn’t hold back—Kanchenjunga’s south face, Rathong, and the Kabru peaks show up in a bigger way, like they’re closer than they should be.

Neither choice is really "better," though. The North feels kind of cleaner and more straightforward to the mountain viewpoints, with fewer sideways detours and less messing around. The South gives you this frozen scenery that just stays in your mind, along with a wider lineup of peaks you can take in. A lot of trekkers also stitch both routes together, going over the Selele Pass so you can collect Kanchenjunga’s full grandeur from more than one viewpoint, not just from one.

Trek Highlights

Take a close up look at Kanchenjunga, the world’s third highest mountain, side by side with Mount Makalu.

This far off region opened to foreign travelers only in 1988, keeping the wilderness kind of flawless , pristine, you know.

It feels like a real paradise for people who crave adventure and remote footpaths, plus that untouched Himalayan wildness.

The glaciers here show you the raw, dramatic character of this high altitude Himalayan landscape region, its kind of intense.

You can also experience the local way of life and deep culture of ethnic communities like the Limbus and Rais, it’s very memorable.

Stroll through blooming rhododendron forests, then enjoy the views of traditional terrace farms , working fields in a very old style.

Look out for Himalayan wildlife too, like black bears, barking deer, and the difficult to spot, endangered Red Panda.
