Trek Overview

Trek Overview

The Makalu and Sherpani Col Pass trekking approach to Makalu Base Camp has been compared to the Yosemite Valley on a grand scale! To reach some of the most amazing mountain scenery in the Himalayas, you first have to cross the challenging Kongma Danda, covered in cloud forest draped in hanging orchids. There are a few villages along the approach to the fifth-highest peak in the world, Mt. Makalu (8485 m), the summit of which stands 3 km above Base Camp. The mountaineering route over the glaciated Sherpani Col (6180 m), West Col (6190 m), and Amphu Labsta (5845 m) to the Everest region involves the highest and hardest passes in the entire Himalaya; the rewards of such an undertaking are more than worthwhile! During this trek, there will be sections where the trail is very rugged or ill-defined; some trails have been trekked only once by a small party, and so the going will be tough. Space in some camp sites will also be very limited. It may be necessary to make changes to the itinerary at any time due to unforeseen circumstances such as adverse weather, snow or trail conditions, river water levels, or group movement. Your trip leader will advise of any changes should this occur.

The Australian Himalayan Foundation is dedicated to helping the people of the Himalaya achieve their goals through supporting and overseeing education, health, cultural, and environmental projects.

Makalu and Sherpani Col Pass trekking can be merged with the Everest Base Camp trek for a truly extraordinary Himalayan adventure, where you cross remote high passes and glaciers before joining the classic Everest trail. It is a hard trip, though, and it gives you breathtaking sights of Makalu, Baruntse, Lhotse, and Everest, mixing untamed wilderness exploration with those well-known Everest Base Camp moments.

Trek Highlights

Trek Highlights

Sightseeing in Kathmandu valley - Pashupatinath (a major Hindu shrine) and the giant Buddhist stupa at Boudhanath

Climb through the Sherpani Col, the West Col (6,190m), and Amphu Labsta (5,845m) (6,180m) too. Tackle three serious high elevation routes that will still require crampons, ropes, and mountaineering knowhow, kind of like, you know, staying sharp. You’ll get unmatched icy glacier panoramas over that distant Hongu Basin.

Join in one of the world’s hardest treks, seriously, it’s not for the casual crowd. Challenge your limits on a legendary high altitude trail, it pushes your stamina hard, pays you back with grit and determination, and yeah, it leaves memories that are going to stick with you like forever.

See sweeping, completely open panoramas of Everest plus mighty Makalu, rising right up dramatically above the clouds from remote, seldom-reached Himalayan lookouts.

Step into Nepal’s living heritage, feel the sincere hospitality, visit timeless monasteries, and catch vibrant festivals with the Sherpa and Rai communities, who carry a lot of pride.
