The Upper Mustang trek in Nepal is commonly referred to as the Mustang trek. Among more trekkers, the Upper Mustang trek is also well-known as the Lo Manthang trek. This is an interesting trek that takes you to unspoiled Tibetan villages situated at the northern border between Nepal and Tibet. Foreigners were restricted from visiting Lo Manthang until 1992 AD. Lo-Manthang is a small kingdom. Still, it has a king. You see the king’s palace surrounded by Gompa and private houses.
The Upper Mustang trek in Nepal gives you an opportunity to experience the unique beauty of the Himalayan desert, a strange and unusual landscape. Geographically, the land is an extension of the Tibetan plateau, characterized by windy and arid valleys, eroded canyons, and unique stratified rock formations.
A day excursion to Lo Manthang and the Eastern Valley, Nyphu and Gharphu, is another highlight of this trip. The trail drops into the small valley north of Lo Manthang, crossing the river trail ascent, and then contours around north cultivation stretches to the Mustang Khola. After a two-hour walk from Lo Manthang, after crossing the wooden bridge on the west bank of the Mustang Khola, ahead on the right, you can see the dramatic cave village of Chosar and the red monastery of Nyphu set into the rock face. The trail has a chorten and rounds a bend opposite Chooser to display the village and monastery of Gharphu ahead on the east side of the Mustang Khola. This is reached by crossing two bridges close to Gharphu (3760 m), where the red Gompa is built out from a vertical rock face and partly set in a cave. Also, you can reach the Nepal-Tibet border with a 6-hour walk from Lo Manthang.
Another day hiking from Lo Manthang and the western valley, Namgyal Tingkat, could be interesting to overlook Lo Manthang. The trail leads half an hour south of the side of the river, becoming quite rocky towards the field, and joins another trail east up towards Namgyal Monastery.
After coming back from Upper Mustang, you also visit Muktinath, the famous temple of both Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims. Visiting this holy site makes your Upper Mustang trek in Nepal, organized by Himalayan Smile Treks, more worthwhile.

This stunning flight takes you above the mighty Dhaulagiri and Annapurna mountain ranges. Experience the close-up sight of snowy summits that are higher than the clouds, valleys that are very deep and have been created by glaciers over a long time, and the vast Himalayan views that only a small number of travelers can see from such closeness.
Explore the old walled capital of Upper Mustang, a maintained medieval city filled with the Tibetan Buddhist culture. Stroll along the tiny pathways, go to the king's house, and take in the practices that have been around for centuries and are still beautifully preserved today.
Get a taste of the unique Tibetan-influenced culture of the Mustangi tribe. Get to know their customs, festivals, which are very colorful, their old language, and agriculture, which is done by the tribe and has been around for many generations. These people are living in great isolation, thus, you can encounter their culture very interestingly.

Hike through the unique desert-like landscape of Upper Mustang, which is made of striking red and ochre cliffs, as well as rock formations eroded by wind, and large deserted plateaus. This barren, treeless area gives off an unreal vibe that is similar to the Tibetan highlands.
The world's deepest gorge is feet under the Kali Gandaki River, and the river's basin is the most popular hiking trail. Walk along the river bank which is considered holy, taking turns on suspension bridges and through canyons where the river has been doing amazing geological work for millions of years.
Look for the ancient ammonite fossils which are known as "shaligrams" on the rocky shores of the Kali Gandaki river. These marine fossils which are 140 million years old and considering holy in Hinduism, show the proof in the form of fossils that the Himalayas had once been under the prehistoric seas.
