Flying drones in Nepal is, of course, not very easy, but it is possible if you have obtained the necessary permits and licenses. The government of Nepal and the Civil Aviation Authority have issued regulations on drone usage. Nowadays, drone usage is gaining popularity all over the world for various purposes. The majority of the usages are for photography; however, it is being used for surveys, research, and spying. There have been several cases of misuse of drones, which raised concerns about authority over their use. Regarding various consequences, the government of Nepal and the Civil Aviation Authority have issued regulations on drone usage. The new rules and regulations for drone usage are mentioned below.

Rules and regulations for using drones in Nepal

  • Drones weighing over 2000 grams and flying over 400 ft are subject to authorization. The permission should be taken from the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the Department of Tourism. For the Everest Base Camp trek, you also need permission from Sagarmatha National Park and Khumbu Municipality.
  • A drone weighing less than 2000 grams does not need to be authorized by CAAN in the case of flying below 200 ft. under private property
  • You cannot fly a drone irresponsibly.
  • You are only permitted to fly 120 m vertically.
  • You are permitted to fly up to 500 m around you; you cannot go further than that.
  • You cannot use drones for dropping animals and articles.
  • You cannot fly a drone over 150 m in any cramped area.
  • You cannot fly a drone within or over 150 m where there is an open-air gathering of 1000 people or more.
  • You cannot fly a drone above 50 m of any vessel, vehicle, structure, or monument.
  • You must have unaided vision over the drone.
  • You cannot fly near airport areas; it is strictly prohibited.
  • You cannot approach or go over the military and VIP area.
  • You should inform the related official if you are flying inside national parks and conservation areas.
