Trek Overview

Mani Rimdu festival is one of the most fascinating High Himalayan Buddhist festivals celebrated every year, usually in November (date fixed by the lunar calendar) in the Tengboche monastery. It is an old Buddhist monastery located on a ridgetop. Mani Rimdu is a colorful festival that depicts the victory of Buddhism over the ancient Bon religion.

Mani Rimdu festivals another attraction is monks with elaborate masks and costumes performing a series of ritualistic dances. We organize trekking, especially for the Mani Rimdu festival. For this trekking, you have to take a mountain flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. After you land at Lukla airstrip your trekking starts in Phakding, the first overnight place, following the Dudh Koshi River. The next day you walk through the forest of rhododendron and magnolia and arrive at Namche, a bustling bazaar (market), that’s a junction for trekkers, the gateway of the Everest base camp trek

You stay one more extra day at Namche for acclimatization. On that day you hike to Syangboche, one of the major spots for the view of Mount. Everest, Mount Lhotse, Mount Amadablam, Mount Thamserku, Mount Kwangde, etc. Then you walk down to Khumjung village, a typical Sherpa village, and overnight stay at a mountain lodge in Namche Bazaar. The next day you trek to Tyangboche. You stay in Tyangboche for four nights for the Mani Rimdu festival. During those days you observe the Mani Rimdu festival. Then on the 10th day you back from Tengboche and follow the same previous route to Lukla.

Following is the schedule for the Mani Rimdu festival this year :

  • WONG (blessings) – 15th,  November 2024
  • CHHAM (masked dance) – 16th, November 2024
  • JHINSAK (fire offerings) – 17th November 2024
  • LHOKPAR (destruction of the sand mandala) – 18th, November 2024.

The Fire Puja is an offering to Agni (the god of fire), and to the Gods of the mandala - to allay all harm in the world. The harm is visualized as dissolving into the grain and butter is burned. Afterwards, the sand mandala in the temple is dismantled, and the sand is given as an offering to the serpent gods (Nagas), at the spring below the monastery.

Day 4 LHOKPAR (destruction of the sand mandala) The sand mandala is carefully constructed, grain by grain, from colored sand. It is an intricate and symbolic design that takes many days to complete. Protective dagger deities are placed around the mandala, and the bowl of Mani Rilwu pills (spiritual medicine) is placed above the center. The mandala becomes the palace of Garwang Thoze Chenpo, the Lord of the Dance; an emanation of the Buddha of Compassion, and the central deity of Mani Rimdu. The mantra "OM AH HUNG RHI, OM MANI PADME HUMG", is repeated thousands of times by the monks, during weeks of ceremony preceding the public festival. During their meditation, they visualize compassion flowing in the form of the mantra, into the Mandala and the Mani Rilwu Pills. Compassion then radiates out from the Mandala, blessing all those who attend the Mani Rimdu festival. During their meditation, the monks visualize all their compassion flowing in the form of the mantra into the mandala and the rilwu pills. From the mandala, compassion radiates out, blessing all those who come to Chiwong.

Traveler Review

We got that the decision to have our trek with Himalayan Smile Treks and Adventures was the best. We did a trek of Tengboche from October 29th, 2009 to November 08 2009. The main aim of this trip was to participate in Mani Rimbu festival. Mani Rimbu is a really exciting festival that celebrates in Tengboche Monastery can be reached one day walk from Namche monastery. It was beyond our expectation. We surprised the Buddhist rituals and different musical instruments used by the monks. We got there a kind of great spiritual environment. We thank the management of Himalayan Smile. They organize everything perfectly from the beginning to the end. They provided us good guide named Dawa Sherpa and hardworking porters. They are so nice and helpful people. So it was a real pleasure to spend with them those days. and other trekking materials. Overall to say the trek was an amazing experience. We are sure to have the next trek with again Himalayan Smile Treks and Adventures, Kathmandu Nepal.
