Family religious tour to Pathivara temple Taplejung
Family religious tour to Pathivara temple Taplejung. The Pathivara temple, a temple of the goddess Pathivara, is situated in the top eastern part of Nepal. The temple lies in the Taplejung district at an elevation of 3750 meters. With lots of enthusiasm and excitement, we started our journey by local night bus. As we were in the middle of the great Hindu festival, Vijaya Dashami, first of all, we went to our relative’s home in Sunsari district, Terai region of Nepal. The Pathivari temple is recognized as one of the important places for Hindu pilgrimage tours in Nepal. We met with our relatives, shared all our happiness and sorrows, and we had lots of fun with them. As we were very tired due to all-night travel on the night bus, we took rest for a day at a relative's home.
The following day, we started our journey from Sunsari to Jhapa, Birtamod. After a one-and-a-half-hour drive on a local bus, we reached Birtamod Bus Park. A small rain was disturbing us, but we also continued our tour. We waited for a jeep for a long time there in the bus park, which could assist our tour. Finally, a jeep came after 3 hours, and we took the same jeep from the bus park to Illam. The weather was very challenging on that day due to light rain and heavy fog. The driver was unable to see the road due to very low visibility, but we continued our journey. According to the local traveler, if the weather were clear, we could see the very best scene on the way. Unfortunately, we lacked that on the first day, but on the return day, we were able to see the very best part of eastern Nepal. That scene forced us to say ‘WOW’. After a drive of 4 hours, we were able to reach Illam. Illam is famous for the tea garden of Nepal. We visited their local market and some beautiful spots, and did some shopping. We spent our night in Illam. We found the people of Illam very friendly, helpful, and cooperative.
A religious family trip to Pathivara Temple in Taplejung is a spiritually uplifting and culturally enriching experience. Located at a height of 3,794 meters in the eastern Himalayas of Nepal, Pathivara Devi is regarded as a powerful goddess who fulfills wishes. Pilgrims from all over Nepal and India visit the temple to pay homage and seek blessings; many of these individuals are often seeking blessings for health, wealth, and happiness.
The journey to the temple is a trek starting from Suketar or Kafle Pati and consists of forests, blooming rhododendron flowers (in spring), and traditional Limbu villages. Families typically combine this sacred opportunity with family time in the peaceful and serene panoramic views of the Kanchenjunga region. Devotees offer red clothes and flowers, and occasionally animals, as a display of their faith as well.
It is truly a remarkable experience to be in the calmness of the holy place, gazing at breathtaking views of the Himalayas with others, and absorbing the spiritual settings through the cozy feel of Pathivara. A Pathivara tour experience is perfect for grandparents, parents, and children. It is not merely a holy pilgrimage site of Buddhism; rather, it touches the heart of blending faith, family, and nature under the protection of the Himalayas.
The next day, early in the morning, after tea, we were ready to go Taplejung district from Illam. On this day, there was no problem with the vehicle, as we had already booked the jeep on the previous day. Today, the weather was also very clear. On the way, we were able to see a very beautiful scene, high mountains, rivers, and snake-moving roads. With singing, talking, and cracking jokes, we reached to Taplejung district after the drive of 7 hours.
After reaching Taplejung, we changed to another vehicle that could take us to the nearest point to our destination. That vehicle took 2 hours to come there. During that time, we managed to keep ourselves busy. We took lunch, we snapped photographs, we interacted with local people, and we collected the experience of the lifestyle of people living in the hilly region. After 2 hours, a jeep came and we started our further journey to Chhate Dhunga (Umbrella Stone). The road was very muddy and very difficult. Our jeep was also stuck there on the muddy road, but with our assistance of us passengers, it was easy to get out of the problem. After the 3-hour drive on such a difficult road, we reached Chhate Dhunga (Umbrella Stone).

As soon as we got off the jeep, we started our trek on a slippery and ascending route, dropping fogs. As the day was getting dark, we had to reach Thulo Phedi on time. We were able to reach at Thulo Phedi after a 2-hour walk from the jeep stand. It was already almost dark, and we were almost wet from the thick fog. On that day, we took lunch and spent the night in the same hotel.
The following day, after having a bath early in the morning in a cold atmosphere, we started our walking journey on the ascending road to Pathivara Temple. It took approximately 1.5 hours to reach the temple. From the top of the mountain, we could see the sunrise, Kanchenjunga mountain, and other high Himalayan ranges, and we could feel the sweet taste of the atmosphere.
The tour was an amazing experience of my life. I was able to find all the materials to tour. I got the chance to explore the ideas of people living in remote areas. I could feel the homely environment by the behavior of people from that area. Their trust in new people and their hospitality are their plus points.
On the return day, the weather was very clear, so that we were able to see all the breathtaking natural beauty of Eastern Nepal. High hills, difficult roads in a hilly region, people’s hospitality, and talking style are the amazing things we could find in that area.
Also, they have their local products like churpi and sweets made up of milk. Chilies, tea leaves, and cardamom are the main products of eastern Nepal.
The only problem in that area is load shedding. So I suggest every visitor carry a torchlight, an extra mobile battery, or a power bank with them.
During this tour, I never missed my home, and we were able to visit the entire district of Mechi Zone, i.e., Jhapa, Illam, Panchthar, and Taplejung. I could say this was the best trip of my life yet.
