Trekkers viewing Machapuchhare sacred mountain in Nepal
By Machapuchhare Trekking | 15 Jul, 2025

Machapuchare, also known as "Fishtail Mountain," is a striking peak located in the Annapurna region of Nepal. While it is a sacred mountain and off-limits for climbing, there are trekking routes in the area that offer stunning views of Machapuchare. Here's some information about trekking around Machapuchare:

  1. Trekking Routes: There are various trekking routes in the Annapurna region that offer views of Machapuchare, including the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) trek and the Mardi Himal trek. Both of these treks provide excellent vantage points to admire the majestic peak.

  2. Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) Trek:

    • The ABC trek is one of the most popular trekking routes in the Annapurna region, and it provides spectacular views of Machapuchare along the way.
    • The trek starts from Nayapul, passes through beautiful forests and traditional villages, and eventually leads to the Annapurna Sanctuary, where you can see Machapuchare up close.
  3. Mardi Himal Trek:

    • The Mardi Himal trek is a quieter alternative to the ABC trek and offers fantastic Machapuchare views.
    • The trek usually starts in Kande and takes you through lush forests and rhododendron-filled valleys. You can enjoy panoramic views of Machhapuchhare from High Camp or Mardi Himal Base Camp.
  4. Permits: For both the ABC and Mardi Himal treks, you'll need the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS) card. These permits are typically obtained in Kathmandu or Pokhara.

  5. Altitude and Weather: Be aware of the altitude as you ascend. Proper acclimatization is essential. The best time to trek in the region is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) when the weather is stable and the views are clear.

  6. Accommodation: Both treks have teahouses and lodges along the way where you can find accommodation and meals, making it unnecessary to carry camping equipment.

  7. Guides and Porters: While it's not mandatory to hire a guide or porter, it can enhance your trekking experience and provide you with valuable local knowledge and support.

Trekking around Machapuchare allows you to experience the stunning natural beauty of the Annapurna region and to witness the splendor of this sacred mountain. Always be prepared, follow the local regulations, and respect the environment and local culture when trekking in this area.
