Tengboche Monastery

Tengboche Monastery, also known as Dawa Choling Gompa, is one of the icons of the Everest region, which introduces the higher Khumbu Valley to the entire world. This holy place is one of the largest monasteries in the Everest region, which is situated on the top of a hill in front of the beautiful mountain Amadablam and beside the confluence of Dudhkoshi and Imja Khola, which is located en route to Everest base camp. This monastery is regarded as Mecca for Sherpa from the high Khumbu Valley, and they have a big respect and honor for this heritage. This highland monastery is located at an elevation of 3867 m/12683 ft., where around 55 monks live permanently. This monastery practices Tibetan Buddhism, whereas the local people in this region also follow Tibetan Buddhism.

Tengboche Monastery, which was built by Lama Gulu in 1916, is blessed by a surreal view of beautiful mountains. To reach this place, we have a few options that we can fly to Lukla, 2800 m, and walk 34 km uphill, or we can take a helicopter. For those who want to escape, an adventure walk, but acclimatization is highly recommended before you head to this place. This holy land is surrounded by forest containing rhododendron, juniper, and fir trees, which adds extra texture and beauty. This monastery suffered a miserable tragedy when it collapsed due to an earthquake in 1934 and was rebuilt later. And again, it got another mishap in 1989, damaged by fire, and then it was rebuilt later. During the earthquake of 2015, it was partially damaged, which was restored later.

Tengboche Monastery is famous for Mani Rimdu festival, which falls in the month of October/November. People from the Khumbu region gather together to see monks dance in front of the mandala inside the monastery, which lasts for a few days. A big bonfire is made in the courtyard, which is fueled with yak butter and homemade liquor, which aims to pull away from the bad spirits.
