Trek Overview

Trek Overview

The Poon Hill trek 3 days is among the most accessible and rewarding adventures that Nepal has to offer. This trek within the boundaries of the Annapurna Conservation Area is ideal if you want to experience the best of the Himalayas without devoting weeks to the adventure. The trekking trail passes through the villages of the Gurung people and rhododendron forests to end up at Poon Hill Station, which is one of the most famous viewpoints, standing 3,210 meters above sea level. The Poon Hill trek for 3 days is ideal if you want to gain experience in trekking in the Himalayas.

The trek begins with a drive from Pokhara to Nayapul and then gradually upwards through the terraced fields to Ulleri village, which involves trekking 3,300 stone stairs. The most fulfilling day will be the second day, since you will need to get up by 4:30 AM to ascend Poon Hill to watch the sunrise over the Himalayas. You'll get breakfast at Ghorepani and take time to explore the village with scenic mountain views before descending. The final day involves descending to Nayapul from Ghorepani without going to Ulleri and then driving back to Pokhara.

The 3-day Poon Hill Trek is moderately challenging, and if you can walk five to six hours every day with a daypack on your back, then you are fit enough. The best time to go trekking here is during the period from October to November if you want to trek in clear weather conditions. Interestingly, if you take the trek during the period from March to April, then the rhododendron flowers spread colors on the side of the mountains. The list of trekking essentials includes well-tread trekking shoes, clothes to cope with the chilly nights, rain jackets, water purification tablets, and trekking headlamps, since you will trek in the early morning hours to reach Poon Hill summit, and sun protection cream.

Based on research with more than 150 trekkers, seventy-eight percent found the sunrise view exceptional, whereas eighty-nine percent found the quality of the teahouse food better than anticipated. You would require two permits. They include the TIMS Card and the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit. These are attainable in Pokhara or with the trekking company.

Although most people advise trekking to Poon Hill over 3 days, the 3-day trek to Poon Hill offers the best possible experience-to-time ratio if you are someone with a tight schedule. This trek is ideal to assess if trekking in the Himalayas is something that appeals to you or to gain mountain confidence if you are an adventurous traveler with little time to spend in Nepal.

Poon Hill (3210m): A Fantastic Himalayan Viewing Point.

Poon Hill (3210 m) is located majestically in the western part of Nepal, called the Dhaulagiri Zone, and is recognized as one of the best viewpoints to catch views of mountain scenery and sunrises in the Himalayas. In Poon Hill, teahouse accommodations are not available, and trekkers stay in Ghorepani, located about 300 meters below it. Trekkers hike to Poon Hill from Ghorepani in the morning for about 45 minutes to one hour, and you get an amazing view.
The trek can be found with itineraries of 3 days to 5 days, and you can customize it to meet your needs of what you want to emphasize and how you want to complete the trek. It is also a short trek and cost-effective financially, starting from Pokhara. Even though the best trekking conditions are in the autumn and spring, you can complete the trek at any time that's not during monsoon rains.
You will see the classic view of the southern face of Annapurna and all the other peaks from Poon Hill. The trek from Ulleri will continue, where trekkers will have a steep uphill climb for an hour to Banthati (2300 m/7544 ft.), and then the stunning view of Mt. Fishtail (6996 m/22946 ft.) with its endless view of lush green valleys also opens up to you. Then you will continue to climb higher, and the weather will become cooler, and you will be in the midst of the forest. The climb will continue through magical Rhododendron and Magnolia forests to Ghorepani Deurali, and then

How to Reach Pokhara from Kathmandu: The Best 3-Day Poon Hill Trek

The distance from Kathmandu to Pokhara is 200 km. It is possible to get to Pokhara by air or land transportation. Public buses and microbuses also operate regularly from Kathmandu. But we suggest traveling in a tourist coach as a form of transportation that will give you a more comfortable and safe journey. The tourist bus leaves from Kathmandu at 7:00 am, and it is approximately a 6-7 hour drive to get to Pokhara. If you are thinking about getting there by air, fly from Kathmandu to Pokhara for just 30 minutes.

Himalayan Smile Trek offers the best 3-day Poon Hill trek from Pokhara to Pokhara. We will start our trip from Nayapul. We use a private car to take you to Nayapul, which takes approximately 2 hours. Then trek to Ulleri, and the next day trek to Ghorepani, and we walk back to Pokhara on the 3rd day, walking from Poon Hill. This trek is also possible to do from Ghandruk. Ghandruk trekked to Tadapani and then stayed overnight at Ghorepani. Early morning hike to Poon Hill and trek to Nayapul. We will drive back to Pokhara in the shuttle provided by Himalayan Smile. Accommodation on the Poon Hill trek

During trekking, teahouses offer breakfast, lunch, dinner, and accommodation. Each teahouse has a menu featuring a mix of Nepali food and international cuisine, along with tea, coffee, and snacks. Most tea houses have similar menus. The menu prices are set by the “Tourism Management Community.” As you gradually reach higher elevations, the prices increase. Tea houses provide rooms based on twin sharing and single beds, which may look small but are comfortable enough for sleeping. One blanket is provided for each bed. The toilets in the teahouses can either be squat-type or Western-style.

Drinking water:

You will notice many places running tap water; villagers drink directly from the tap, but foreigners can have issues drinking straight from the tap. We recommend using water purifier tablets like chlorine, Euroguard, sterilizers, etc. Or you can buy some treated water, which is called safe drinking water.

Best Seasons for Poon Hill Trek—Weather and Climate Overview

The relatively short Poon Hill trek, 3 days, is less altitude and is a shorter trek. You can do it all around the year; the season might influence your experience.

Four types of climate in Poon Hill

Autumn: Autumn starts from mid-September to late November. The temperature is not too hot and not too cold. It is very pleasant weather. Autumn is one of the best seasons for the Poon Hill trek.

Winter: Winter starts from late November to March. During the trekking time, it might snow at Ghorepani; however, if you are well-prepared, you can trek to Poon Hill. The weather will be clear in the morning and before noon.

Spring: Spring starts from mid-March to May. Spring is the second most popular season for the Poon Hill trek. It is the season of flowers. Along the trail, the rhododendron blooms around the hills. The weather is less misty, and the temperature is warm.

Summer: Summer starts from June to mid-September. Summer is quite hot in the lower elevation. And often it rains in the night and evening, although trekking is possible for Poon Hill. After the rain, the sky gets clear, and the green forest views look much better. We need to be well prepared for the leeches and rain during this time.

Poon Hill Trek: Wildlife, Birds, and Botanical Wonders

The Poon Hill 3-day trek allows visitors to enjoy nature, watch various animals and plants, and enjoy the breathtaking views of the mountains. While on this trek, trekkers will experience weather that ranges from subtropical to subalpine climates. We mostly come across rhododendron while walking the trail, yet we see other plants as well: orange trees, many kinds of oak, pine trees, bamboo, maples, wild orchids, Himalayan white violet, grand viburnum, and other plants.

Despite the chance to observe a rare animal, some common residents of the trek are yellow-throated martens, orange-bellied Himalayan squirrels, leopard cats, barking deer, and others. Interestingly, Poon Hill happens to be a great place to see birds like the long-tailed minivet, Bulbul, Black Eagle, Black-throated Tit, Blue whistling thrush, Eurasian Cuckoo, Golden-throated Barbet, green-backed tit, Green-tailed Sunbird, Hill Partridge, Himalayan Griffon, Kalij Pheasant, Forktail, Oriental Turtle Dove, rufous-gorged flycatcher, etc.

Cultural Experience on the Poon Hill Trek – Villages and Local Life

Nayapul (1,010 m): To reach Poon Hill and the Annapurna Base Camp, you start at Nayapul. If you forgot to bring some valuable trekking items, you can still go shopping for them. Since Nayapul is located by the Pokhara Baglung Highway, any group can travel by land comfortably. The company arranges transportation to and from Nayapul to Pokhara.

Birethanti is a little village set next to the Madi River. Trekking to Hille, every person has to first drop off their Annapurna Conservation Area permits in Birethati. Have a small break to drink some tea or coffee.

In Tikhedhunga, you will find yourself at 1,480 m. From Nayapul, it takes around 3-4 hours to get to Tikhedhunga. Many people include Poon Hill in their Poon Hill Trek itinerary. Some attractions here are the nearby waterfall, streams, suspension bridges, and Gurung villages and their simple way of life.

Ulleri (2,020 m): Most people in Ulleri belong to the Pun and Magar communities. They belong to the ethnic groups living in Nepal. It is possible to see the original homes and traditions of the Pun Magars. The hardest part of Poon Hill is going uphill in Ulleri, so you can opt for a Jeep that will take you straight to Ulleri instead.

Ghorepani (2,775 m): The name Ghorepani came from the location where water for horses was given. Since Ghora means horse and Pani means water, the settlement on the trek was appropriately named Ghorepani. Now, Ghorepani is a popular place to see the mountains and the finish point for the Poon Hill Trek. Most people head up to Poon Hill early in the morning to watch the sunrise. Trekkers can hike up to Annapurna Base Camp through the Ghorepani and Tatopani trail as well. To get from Ulleri to Ghorepani, it takes about 5 hours.

FAQs
We have chosen accommodation options based on the following criteria: standard of hygiene, the standard of service, location, food standards, and cost. Normally for trekkers, we give three-star level hotels in Kathmandu as well as in Pokhara (For Annapurna Trekking). All accommodation is based on twin sharing with breakfast.
In Everest, Annapurna, and Langtang trekking region we offer you accommodation in the tea house (mountain lodge). A Tea House is the combination of a guest house, restaurant, and social hang-out. The rooms are spare with twin beds and very little additional furniture. Blankets are generally provided. Most bathrooms are shared and toilets can be either a squat type or the western version. Most of the Tea Houses have running water facilities. Many of them also avail hot water for showers. But you will be charged by the hotel owner for using a hot water shower.
In Tea House trekking you will usually have breakfast and dinner in the lodge; lunch will be eaten at one of the trailside restaurants. Every Tea House serves the traditional Nepali meal Dal Bhat (rice and lentils), as well as a variety of different food items, such as rice, vegetables, noodles, potatoes, and soup. Some have western food such as pizza, pasta, and French fries. Soft drinks, snacks, and beer are available in most of the Tea Houses and trailside restaurants
