Everest Base Camp Trekking General Information: Provide all information about the EBC trek. It is one of the best treks in the world. Walking through the world's highest terrain in the Khumbu Valley is a memory of a lifetime. Following in the footsteps of Edmund Hillary & Tenzing Norgay, playing hide-and-seek with yak and yeti. Sitting close to the world's highest mountain is joyful, which can create the best moment in life.
Mount Everest is located in the northeastern part of Nepal, bordering Tibet, China. Surrounded by a bunch of the world's highest mountains, and itself the tallest mountain. The easiest and convenient way to reach the Everest region is to take a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. Lukla is a small town where there is a small airfield. Most of the people who go to Everest use a flight to Lukla and fly back from Lukla, which is the easiest and most convenient way to reach the Everest Khumbu region.
Below here we have a discussion about frequently asked questions related to the Everest Base Camp Trek.

How high is Everest Base Camp?
Everest Base Camp itself is 5365 m, but during the Everest Base Camp trek, we mostly visit the place called Kalapatthar, which is 5545M, so, mostly Kalapatthar is the highest elevation during the Everest trek. The last place before Everest base camp, where we sleep overnight, is called Gorakshep, which is 5160 m, so Gorakshep is the highest place where we sleep overnight.

How many kilometers do I have to walk during the Everest Base Camp trek?

During the Everest Base Camp trek, we have to walk a lot. Even on the rest day, we do an acclimatization hike to a higher elevation, so roughly we walk around 160 km during the trek.

Below, we discuss frequently asked questions related to the Everest Base Camp Trek

What kind of facilities can we get in the tea house?

The lodges available in the mountains are called tea houses. They used to have a dining area with a fire, a neat and clean room for sleeping, a toilet and shower, and they prepared food for trekkers. They used to have a few pages of menu with Western, Nepali, Indian, & Chinese food, so we have plenty of choices for food.

How is the climate throughout the year?

The Everest region gets four seasons: summer, winter, autumn, and spring. For Everest trekking, autumn (Sep, Oct, Nov) is the best season, and spring (Mar, Apr, May) is the second best season. Nepal gets plenty of rain during the monsoon, which is in the summer season (June, July, and August), so this time we have to avoid trekking because we don’t have good visibility. It is usually cloudy most of the time, possibility of landslides, and the wet and greasy trail makes it harder to walk. And then we are talking about the winter season. Why should we avoid Everest in the winter season? Because in the Everest trek, most of the trail is above 3500M and it is usually snowy and icy. The days are shorter, and the nights are longer. The longer night used to be very chilly; the temperature in the last place we went to sleep close to base camp can easily go around -20.

How is the temperature at Everest Base Camp in Mar/Apr/May?

Early March can be a bit chilly during the Everest trek; after that, it gets warmer. In high elevations like Gorkshep (5160 m) and Lobouche (4900 m), where we have to sleep, it can go below zero during the night, and during sunny days it is usually around 20°C. During April and May, it’s not that chilly and not that warm. During the sunny day, it’s pretty warm, and the minimum temperature at night could be around freezing level.

Is it possible to see Mt. Everest from base camp?

For sure, this is the most asked question about the Everest trek. We can see Mt. Everest from base camp, but it doesn’t look that good. It looks like an old man in the middle of beautiful ladies. For the best Everest view, we have to climb Kala Patthar, 5545 m.

Kalapatthar 5545 m short information

Kalapatthar is a viewpoint to see Mt Everest and the surrounding mountains. Not only the mountain do we have an excellent view of the Khumbu Glacier (a 32 km long glacier stretching from Khumbu Icefall to Thokla at 4650 m) from Kalapatthar. We cannot see a perfect Everest view from Base Camp, so we must climb Kalapatthar. From Gorakshep (5160 m), it takes 3 hours to reach the top of Kalapatthar. The way to Kalapatthar is difficult somehow because of its already high elevation, so it takes time to make the step uphill. It is highly recommended that while climbing at high altitude, we should take a slow pace and have to listen to our body.

List of mountains that we can see from Kalapatthar.
